Luis Canas Rioja Reserva de la Familia 2020

Bodegas Luis Caas is a family-run winery in the Rioja Alavesa region, established in 1928 with roots extending well before then in Rioja soil. The estate tends 350 ha of vineyard across hundreds of small plots nestled under the Sierra Cantabria mountains. Soils are mostly chalky-clay, low-fertility soils on slopes and terraces, prompting low yields and concentrated grapes. The house embraces sustainable, organic-leaning viticulture, avoiding herbicides and synthetic fertilisers.

The 2019 Luis Caas Reserva de la Familia is a blend of approximately 85 % Tempranillo and 15 % Cabernet Sauvignon. Grapes are hand-harvested, double-sorted, then fermented with controlled maceration. The wine ages 20 months in new French and American oak barrels before bottling. Expect rich aromas of ripe black fruit, cedar, spice and subtle oak toast; full-bodied with firm yet polished tannins and a long, layered finish. It pairs beautifully with roast lamb or beef, hearty stews, grilled red meats or mature cheeses.
