As a sixth generation winemaker at the helm of his family’s Friuli estate (which has been producing wine since 1846), Paolo Rodaro is no new kid on the block! The grape is Schioppettino – a difficult varietal that was nearly lost to extinction in the late 19th century when growers began replacing it with more widely known (and lucrative) options such as Cabernet Sauvignon. In the glass, this wine is lively and intriguing, with notes of ripe blackberries and dark plums, cracked black pepper, cloves and dried wild herbs. Enjoy with smoky pulled pork, spezzatino di vitello (veal and mixed bell pepper stew) or pizza margherita!
